petriform is an artist who participated in the final cohost weekend compo (“compost”), hosted by @hvb, and had an outstanding entry there. turns out, they were on the verge of releasing this fascinating project, merging gameboy and virtuaboy sounds in a mind-blasting album release.
i had to check this out, and it lives up to my expectations–extremely hard-hitting techno and trance bangers with some great melodies hidden in there. petriform does not bother sticking to hardware limitations, but also doesn’t shy away from the specific sound these two devices make. the final few tracks even hit some soaring highs with vocoder vocals, which was a surprise, but one that works extremely well!
i was particularly struck by this release because as soon as i saw that furnace tracker added support for the virtua boy, i was extremely tempted to play around with it–the specific limits of the virtua boy are really cool, and its such untreaded ground… well, here comes this album to show me how it’s done!
hard to pick a favorite track since i’ve only listened to it a couple times so far, but sullen construct with its beautiful melodic touches stands out to me right now.
