one last mix for the road. there have been a lot of great chiptune releases, so this compiles some stellar new releases with some deep cuts from some all time great chiptune composers. some hardware-accurate, some not at all, but all very much worth your time!

well, here we are, wish it was in other circumstances. i’m not gonna lie, my feelings about the untimely end of cohost have seeped into this mix a little, i definitely leaned towards more aggressive and intense vibe this go around. if you wanted, you could frame a narrative around anger in the start of the mix, bargaining in the middle, and building towards a sense of peace and even hope at the end.
at any rate, what i can’t express in words, i express in music–in this case other people’s music. but make no mistake: this isn’t a thrown together mix–this selection is of extremely high quality. i believe all of these tracks are (primarily) made using trackers, with quite a few being hardware-compatible/accurate. some of the limitations that these composers work with are crushing, such as the opener by veteran maak–a C64 track, meaning it uses just 3 voices! same goes for the stellar track by naruto2413, later in the mix (one of almost 40 short songs that he composed/released this year just to demonstrate his PSG driver–spread across four releases that all showcase his earned status as a legend).
mixed in with the newer tracks are some relatively deep cuts from IMO some of the scene’s chip maestros, such a blitz lunar’s fantastic “super bat puncher” soundtrack, a track from kulor’s masterpiece release “soundchip salad”, and of course virt and beek have to be represented! i also really wanted to include a track from blower & cohost’s own @hvb‘s stellar collaborative release–tiny little tracked songs (the whole releases fits on a double density floppy disk!) that deserve to see more of a spotlight.
i closed out this set with an optimistic track by young japanese supertalent rei8bit. i hope we can all find our way taking the positives and the lessons learned from this place… thanks to staff, thanks to everybody who followed, and i hope i see you in the future.
