kids will find a way

[]

i found this interesting: i turned on a rain stream on youtube just as white noise, and like every livestream it comes with a chatroom–what i didn’t expect was that this chatroom is actually being used! i saw kids chatting in there and there were even regulars that seemed to have a rapport with one another.

it just really made me think that kids will almost always find a way to have a space that’s their own. and inherently us adults wouldn’t always know about it. i also heard about some teens using the discussion (or notes?) section in google docs for communication because that website wasn’t blocked on their school campus.

i love that kinda stuff and it gives me joy that they’re doing it in these margins. reminds me of passing the TI-83 calculator back and forth with my friends in math class to chat with each other (this was before we even had mobile phones, let alone smartphones).

another recent example of this that tickled me was the teens who found community by encoding a Discord server link inside One Million Checkboxes – the creator of the site made a great write-up about it. not only will kids find a way, they’ll find many ways that cater to different interests. love it!

we had ti-82 calculators and we absolutely ran shenanigans on them in class haha! i also remember really about a huge warrior cats RP that kids ran in Barnes & Noble online reviews as that website was the only one you could access from a certain e-reader. hell yeah kids, figure it out and don’t tell the adults.

haha yeah in addition to just using it as a texting mechanism my friend coded a rudimentary pokemon battle simulator on it, among other things. i even tried to code a sprite loader using matrices (which didnt work at all lmao)

I love this sort of thing so much, it really reminds me of how people would turn specific obscure GameFAQs boards into their personal message boards. People always find a purpose for the unused, and that’s wonderful imo

oh that’s so funny too ? i made at least one real friend in a soulseek chat room too (though that was in my 20s so not exactly kids anymore)
